Cégep de Sept-Îles offers a program in industrial maintenance technology since 1993. This program and those of industrial electronics technology and mineral technology confirm the expertise of the college in the field of heavy machinery industry. Apart from these programs, professional development programs are offered such as mechanical maintenance, industrial reliability, train conductor, iron processing, etc. In addition, the Cégep de Sept-Îles is developing at the international level.

In term of technology transfer, the first initiative of the college, with contributions from the local companies, was the establishment in 2002 of  a not-for-profit organization (NPO) covering the territory of the Côte-Nord administrative region of the province of Quebec. Moreover, in 2008, the college receved the recognition of its College Centre for the Transfer of Technologies (CCTT) in industrial maintenance and entrusted its management to the NPO.

Under the demand for the renewal of the recognition of the CCTT in 2011, the Cégep proceeded to make the CCTT part of its institution. The CCTT is known as the Institut technologique de maintenance industrielle (ITMI), which can be translated as the technological institute of industrial maintenance. The ITMI is a member of the Trans-Tech network. The ITMI, though the Cégep de Sept-Îles, is eligible for several funding programs of research, including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). Finally, because of its fields of intervention in applied research, the ITMI is one of the seven research units of the Cégep de Sept-Îles.
